A PC power supply is responsible for providing a stable voltage to the motherboard, processor, graphics card, storage devices, and other computer components. If the power supply is unstable, the system may fail to boot, shut down under load, reboot, or pose a risk of damaging components.
The Ramservice service center in Bratislava performs diagnostics, selection, and replacement of power supplies for home, office, gaming, and work PCs. The technician first checks the cause of the malfunction and only then determines whether a new PSU is actually needed.
When You Might Need a New Power Supply
Power supply issues don’t always manifest the same way. In some cases, the computer doesn’t respond to the power button at all; in others, it starts up but shuts down during gaming, rendering, or other heavy loads.
Signs that indicate you should check the power supply:
- the computer doesn’t respond to the power button;
- the PC turns on for a few seconds and then shuts down immediately;
- the system spontaneously restarts while gaming or running resource-intensive programs;
- the computer shuts down under load without displaying a blue screen;
- You hear clicking, squeaking, crackling, or other unusual noises coming from the case;
- There is a burning smell or signs of overheating;
- The PC has become unstable after a power surge;
- the graphics card or storage drives periodically disappear from the system;
- the power supply fan isn’t spinning or is making a lot of noise;
- After upgrading the graphics card, the computer started shutting down under load.
These symptoms are not definitive proof of a PSU malfunction. The cause could be the motherboard, graphics card, RAM, storage drive, power button, a short circuit, or an external power supply.
Why It’s Important to Choose the Right PSU
Replacing a power supply isn’t just about choosing a model with a higher wattage. It’s important to consider the system’s actual load, the type of case, the graphics card, the number of storage drives, and future upgrades.
When selecting a power supply, consider:
- Power output, taking into account the CPU, graphics card, and a margin for the load.
- Form factor—ATX, SFX, TFX, Flex ATX, or a proprietary format.
- The necessary connectors for the motherboard, CPU, GPU, SATA, and other devices.
- Support for PCIe 6+2-pin, 12VHPWR, or 12V-2×6 connectors for modern graphics cards.
- Stability on the 12V rail.
- Protection against overvoltage, short circuits, and overloads.
- Component quality, noise level, and efficiency.
- Cable length and the ability to route cables neatly inside the case.
80 Plus certification indicates energy efficiency, but does not in itself guarantee the quality of the power supply. The brand, component quality, voltage stability, and compatibility with your specific PC configuration are also important.
Diagnostics Before Replacement
Ramservice does not install a new power supply without first performing a diagnostic check. First, the technician assesses the symptoms, checks the cables, connections, the power button, the motherboard, and other components that may affect the computer’s startup.
Diagnostics may include:
- checking the power cable, outlet, extension cord, or surge protector;
- a visual inspection of the PSU, cables, and connectors;
- checking the PC’s response when powered on;
- testing with a working power supply;
- assessing the system load;
- Check the motherboard, graphics card, storage devices, and RAM if necessary;
- searching for short circuits or signs of overheating.
This approach helps avoid replacing a working part unnecessarily and accurately pinpoint the source of the problem.
How to Install a New Power Supply
The technician disconnects the old PSU, checks the cable connection diagram, and installs a compatible power supply. After that, the motherboard, processor, graphics card, storage drives, and other devices are reconnected.
After installation, the technician tests the PC’s startup, stability, noise level, fan operation, and system behavior under load. For modular power supplies, it’s important to use cables that are specifically compatible with the particular PSU model. Cables from different power supplies should not be mixed, as the pinout may differ and could damage components.
When the Problem Isn’t the Power Supply
A computer may fail to boot or shut down unexpectedly for reasons other than the PSU. Similar symptoms can occur due to a malfunctioning motherboard, graphics card, RAM, storage drive, power button, front panel, or cables.
Other possible causes include an overheating CPU or graphics card, a short circuit in one of the components, a damaged connector, a faulty extension cord, a power filter, or an outlet. The technician’s job is to identify the actual cause, not just to install a new part.
