A modern discrete graphics card is the most complex computing module in a computer system. It has its own multi-phase power supply, high-speed video memory and a graphics processing unit containing billions of transistors. Due to the high component density and extreme thermal loads, even top-of-the-range NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon models eventually require expert intervention.
The Ramservice repair centre offers professional repair of graphics cards of all generations in a laboratory setting. Our precision BGA assembly equipment enables us to successfully resolve issues that other repair shops consider beyond repair.
Typical faults in gaming and professional GPUs
A disruption in the stable operation of a graphics card is usually accompanied by characteristic signs indicating a specific faulty component. Seeking timely service at the first signs of a problem often allows you to save an expensive device from complete failure. The main reasons for diagnosis are the following conditions:
- Image artefacts and distortions – the appearance of random stripes, coloured dots or a so-called ‘checkerboard’ pattern on the screen indicates degraded contacts beneath the graphics processor or a fault in the VRAM modules.
- Black screen on PC startup – the failure of the device to initialise and the absence of a signal on the monitor often indicates a critical failure in the power supply circuits (VRM) or damage to the graphics card’s BIOS chip.
- ‘Code 43’ error in Device Manager – the operating system recognises the card, but the driver cannot launch it. This is a classic sign of a hardware fault in the memory controller or a GPU failure.
- Overheating and excessive fan noise – the cooling system running at maximum speed under minimal load indicates that the thermal interface material has dried out or that the thermal pads have lost their properties, creating a risk of the PCB burning through.
- The graphics card is not detected by the system – this behaviour is often the result of mechanical damage to the PCI-E connector pins or the failure of logic components.
Complex component repair and BGA assembly
Repairing modern graphics cards requires not only in-depth theoretical knowledge but also the use of expensive industrial equipment. The Ramservice repair centre carries out a full range of component-level repair work:
- Reballing and replacement of the graphics processing unit (GPU) – to restore the contact connection between the chip and the board, we use an infrared rework station with software-controlled temperature profiles. This ensures uniform heating without the risk of warping the PCB.
- Replacement of video memory (VRAM) chips – faulty memory modules are diagnosed using specialised software (MATS/MODS). Professional replacement of individual GDDR6 or GDDR6X memory banks allows the graphics card to be restored to stability without replacing the entire unit.
- Power phase (VRM) repair – we replace blown MOSFET transistors and PWM controllers, and repair damaged conductive traces.
- BIOS flashing and software restoration – we restore the BIOS to its factory settings following unsuccessful overclocking attempts or the card’s operation in extreme mining modes.
Why you shouldn’t try to warm up a graphics card at home
Attempts to revive a graphics card using a construction hair dryer or a domestic oven are a fatal mistake for the electronics. This method leads to uncontrolled expansion of materials, resulting in internal breaks in the structure of the graphics chip itself.
Heating without specialised flux and strict adherence to the temperature profile will only completely destroy any chance of professional repair. The temporary effect of such ‘repairs’ lasts from a few days to a week, after which the card fails permanently.
Maintenance and professional cooling at Ramservice
Preventive maintenance is a key factor in the longevity of discrete graphics cards, particularly the latest RTX 40 and RTX 50 series. Our service uses only premium thermal interfaces with a thermal conductivity of at least 8.5 W/mK.
Particular attention is paid to professional thermal pads. Our technicians select the thickness of the interfaces with an accuracy of tenths of a millimetre to ensure the heatsink is perfectly pressed against the VRM areas and the high-speed GDDR7 or GDDR6X memory. Regular preventive maintenance and the replacement of thermal materials once a year help to prevent thermal degradation of components.
