A desktop computer gradually accumulates dust inside its case. It settles on the fans, heat sinks, graphics card, power supply unit, dust filters, and the inside walls of the case. This impairs airflow, increases noise, and can cause components to operate at elevated temperatures.
The Ramservice service center in Bratislava provides professional cleaning for home, office, gaming, and work PCs. A technician cleans dust from the case, checks the fans and heat sinks, inspects the condition of the thermal paste, and verifies the cooling system’s operation after service.
When to Clean Your Computer
Dust inside the case isn’t always immediately noticeable, but over time it affects the PC’s temperature, noise levels, and stability. Computers tend to get dirty especially quickly if they’re placed on the floor, near a carpet, in a dusty room, or if they run for many hours every day.
You may need to clean your PC if:
- the computer has become noisier;
- the fans are constantly running at high speeds;
- the PC freezes or shuts down while gaming or running resource-intensive programs;
- the inside of the case is noticeably clogged with dust;
- the CPU or graphics card temperature has risen compared to before;
- the computer hasn’t been cleaned in a long time;
- Noise levels increase rapidly after launching games or rendering tasks;
- there is a layer of dust visible on the ventilation openings and filters;
- The PC is sitting on the floor, near a carpet, or in a dusty room;
- After an upgrade or repair, you need to tidy up the inside of the case.
These symptoms don’t always indicate a serious malfunction. In many cases, preventive cleaning, checking the fans, and restoring normal airflow inside the case are sufficient.
Why Dust Is Dangerous for a PC
Dust hinders the normal flow of air through the case and heat sinks. As a result, the CPU, graphics card, storage drives, power supply, and other components may overheat. The fans start running at higher speeds, and the computer becomes noisier.
Dust buildup can lead to the following problems:
- increased CPU temperature;
- graphics card overheating;
- noisy fan operation;
- reduced performance due to overheating;
- freezing or shutting down under load;
- faster fan wear;
- contamination of filters, heat sinks, and circuit boards;
- unstable system performance in games or applications.
Dust doesn’t always cause immediate failure, but it can impair cooling and increase the risk of PC instability. Regular maintenance helps maintain proper airflow and reduces the load on the cooling system.
What’s Included in the Service
During service, the technician assesses the condition of the case, fans, heat sinks, filters, cables, and major components. The scope of work depends on the PC’s design, the level of dirt buildup, and access to individual components.
Cleaning a computer may include:
- Disassembling the case to access the main components.
- Cleaning the case fans.
- Cleaning the CPU heatsink.
- Cleaning dust from the outside of the graphics card and accessible areas.
- Cleaning the dust filters.
- Removing dust from the interior of the case.
- Checking the condition of cables and connectors.
- Checking fan rotation.
- Assessing the condition of the thermal paste on the processor.
- Checking temperatures after maintenance.
Do not disassemble the power supply unit (PSU) unless necessary. During cleaning, you can clean the exterior of the PSU and the ventilation areas, but disassembling the PSU internally should only be done when necessary and in accordance with safety guidelines.
Replacing thermal paste during cleaning
While cleaning the PC, the technician can check the condition of the thermal paste on the CPU. If it has dried out or lost its effectiveness, replacing it helps improve heat transfer between the CPU and the cooler.
Thermal paste does not always need to be replaced during every service. The decision depends on temperatures, the condition of the cooler, the quality of the contact, airflow within the case, and the overall condition of the cooling system. A noticeable reduction in temperatures may not be possible in every case, so the result is assessed after inspecting the PC.
For graphics cards, thermal paste or thermal pads are replaced separately, if necessary and as agreed with the customer.
Why You Shouldn’t Clean Your PC Yourself Without Experience
Users can remove dust from external filters on their own, but deep cleaning a computer requires caution. Inside the case, there are cables, connectors, fans, circuit boards, and other components that can easily be damaged if cleaned improperly.
When cleaning on your own, there is a risk of accidentally disconnecting a cable, damaging a connector, stopping or breaking a fan, improperly reinstalling a cooler after removal, or causing a problem with static electricity. It is also not recommended to use wet wipes, harsh chemicals, or a household vacuum cleaner without understanding the risks.
Professional cleaning is especially important for gaming PCs, high-end PCs, and workstations, where improper maintenance can affect system stability or the condition of components.
