The central processor is responsible for core computations, system startup, running programs, processing commands, and the interaction of many motherboard subsystems. In modern Intel Core, AMD Ryzen, and Apple Silicon laptops, the processor section is closely tied to power delivery, RAM, graphics, controllers, and the BIOS or EFI firmware.
If a laptop won’t turn on, freezes at startup, shows a black screen, or reboots in a loop, the cause isn’t always the CPU itself. The fault may lie in the BGA contacts, power circuits, firmware, memory, or adjacent board components. When the problem may be related to the processor
A processor rarely fails on its own without an external cause. More often the problem appears after overheating, a short circuit, a liquid spill, an impact, chassis deformation, incorrect power delivery, or a previous low-quality repair. In such cases it is not only the chip itself that suffers, but also its contacts, the VRM area, power components, or the motherboard traces.
For the laptop owner, such faults often look the same – the device won’t start or behaves unstably. That is exactly why it is important not to jump to conclusions. A black screen, fans spinning at maximum speed, or a reboot at startup do not yet prove a CPU fault. They are merely signs that point to the need for in-depth hardware diagnostics.

How a BGA processor differs from a removable CPU
Older laptops sometimes used removable processors in a socket. Such a CPU could be removed without soldering, as a separate module. In most modern ultrabooks, MacBooks, and gaming and professional models, the processor is installed in a BGA form factor.
BGA means the chip is soldered directly to the motherboard via an array of small tin contacts. They are located under the processor’s body, so they are not visible once installed. This type of mounting is compact and reliable for manufacturing, but very difficult to repair.
Removing a BGA chip is impossible with an ordinary soldering iron. The work requires a professional infrared or hot-air BGA station, a controlled thermal profile, precise positioning, experience with multilayer boards, and an understanding of the specific platform’s thermal limits. A mistake during heating can damage the PCB substrate, neighbouring components, or the chip itself.
Signs of problems in the processor area
Faults in the CPU, BGA contacts, or power circuits can manifest in different ways. Some symptoms resemble problems with RAM, the BIOS, the video chip, or power delivery, so a final conclusion is only reached after testing the board.
Possible signs of a hardware failure:
- the laptop responds to the power button, the indicators light up, and the fans spin, but no image appears on the screen;
- the device reboots in a loop during initialization, before the operating system even starts;
- the system runs unstably even without a serious load;
- blue screens appear with various error codes;
- the laptop freezes during startup or while passing the POST check;
- USB ports, the keyboard, Wi-Fi, or other subsystems linked to the motherboard lines work incorrectly;
- the device fails to initialize after overheating, a fall, a liquid spill, or a short circuit.
Such symptoms do not automatically mean the processor chip needs to be replaced. The cause often lies in power delivery, firmware, controllers, memory, or the BGA connection. Accurate diagnostics help avoid replacing a working component unnecessarily.
Diagnostics of CPU and motherboard power delivery
The CPU’s silicon die itself fails less often than the power components or adjacent motherboard subsystems. For stable operation, the processor needs several voltages, which are generated by the VRM area. It includes MOSFET transistors, chokes, capacitors, drivers, a PWM controller, and other components.
If one of the power phases is not working, the processor may fail to start, overheat, run unstably, or fail to initialize. Short circuits along the power lines, voltage drops, overheating of individual components, or the absence of startup signals are also possible.

The technician checks the standby voltages, the main power lines, the startup signals, the resistance across key circuits, the state of the VRM, and the board’s response to power being applied. A multimeter, a laboratory power supply, an oscilloscope, and a thermal imager may be used to locate faults.
This approach protects the customer from a premature, costly replacement of a working chip. If the problem is a MOSFET, the PWM controller, a short circuit, or a damaged line, component-level repair of the relevant board section is performed.
BGA soldering, reballing, or installing a new chip
After diagnostics, the technician determines the optimal recovery scenario. If the processor itself is functional but there is a suspicion that the BGA contacts are compromised, reballing may be considered. This is a procedure in which the chip is removed and cleaned of the old solder, after which a new matrix of tin balls is formed beneath it using a precise stencil.
Reballing is not appropriate in every case. It is used when there are technical grounds to believe that the problem lies specifically in the contacts under the chip, rather than in power delivery, firmware, or another component. The cause of a broken solder joint may be overheating, board deformation, mechanical stress, or a previous low-quality repair.
If the CPU is electrically damaged, instead of reballing it may be necessary to install a compatible working chip. The work is performed on BGA equipment with controlled heating. A correct thermal profile, quality flux, precise positioning, even cooling, and testing of the board after mounting are all important.
Ramservice does not promise to “repair the silicon die,” since physically restoring a damaged die is impossible. The service performs solder repair, restoration of the electrical circuits around the processor area, or chip replacement, where this is technically possible and economically justified.
