A laptop keyboard is subjected to constant mechanical stress on a daily basis. The keys are pressed thousands of times, and dust, crumbs, moisture and small debris get trapped underneath them. Over time, individual keys may stick, respond with a delay, or stop working altogether. In such cases, professional laptop keyboard repair or replacement is required.

Ramservice carries out laptop keyboard repairs for MacBook, Lenovo ThinkPad and IdeaPad, HP Pavilion, ProBook, EliteBook, Dell Inspiron, Latitude, XPS, ASUS VivoBook, ZenBook, ROG, Acer Aspire, Swift, Nitro, MSI and other models. Our technician checks not only the keyboard itself, but also the cable, connector, backlighting, signs of liquid damage and the condition of adjacent components. This approach helps to accurately identify the cause of the fault and select the correct repair method.

When is a keyboard repair needed?

A laptop keyboard needs repairing if the keys are not working, some keys are unresponsive, or the laptop keyboard is completely non-functional. Sometimes the user presses a key, but the character does not appear on the screen. In other cases, a single key types multiple characters, keys activate on their own, or incorrect characters are entered.

A common problem is keys sticking after crumbs, dust or liquid get inside. Individual keys, mounting mechanisms or keycaps also often break. In such cases, it is sometimes possible to replace individual keys without replacing the entire keyboard module.

Special attention should be paid to the keyboard backlight. If it flickers, works intermittently or has disappeared completely, the cause may lie in the ribbon cable, controller, connector or the keyboard itself. It is important to carry out diagnostics before repair, as the fault is not always related solely to the keys.

Why does a laptop keyboard stop working?

A laptop keyboard can fail due to mechanical wear and tear, dirt, impact, being dropped, improper disassembly or liquid spillage. Dust and crumbs accumulate under the keys and interfere with the mechanism’s normal operation. As a result, the keys become stiff to press, do not register on the first attempt, or remain stuck in the pressed position.

Mechanical wear is most often noticeable on the Space, Enter, Shift, Ctrl, Backspace, WASD and other keys that are used most frequently. In such situations, it may be necessary to replace individual keys, repair the mounting, or replace the entire laptop keyboard.

The fault may also be caused by the thin keyboard ribbon cable that connects it to the motherboard. If the ribbon cable is damaged, poorly secured or oxidised, the keyboard may not respond at all or may function erratically. The keyboard connector on the motherboard is also checked.

      Repair following liquid spillage

A laptop that has been spilled on is one of the most dangerous situations for the keyboard and all the electronics. Water, coffee, tea, juice, sweet drinks or alcohol can damage the contact tracks, the backlight, the cable, the connector and components on the motherboard. Even if the laptop continues to work after being spilled on, corrosion can develop gradually.

Once liquid has entered the device, you should not continue to use it or connect a charger. Moisture inside the casing can cause a short circuit, and residues of sugary drinks often form a sticky layer under the keys. This is precisely why keys stick, individual buttons fail to work, or the entire laptop keyboard stops functioning.

At Ramservice, repairs following liquid spillage begin with a diagnostic check. The technician inspects the condition of the keyboard, backlighting, ribbon cable, connector, motherboard and areas where liquid may have entered. If only the keyboard is damaged, it is repaired or replaced. If the liquid has penetrated deeper, the customer is advised on options for further laptop repairs following the spill.

      Replacement of individual keys

Not every fault requires a complete replacement of the laptop keyboard. If a single key has fallen out, the keycap is broken, or the mounting mechanism is damaged, it is sometimes possible to replace individual keys. Such repairs depend on the laptop model, the type of mechanism, the condition of the mounting point, and the availability of compatible parts.

In modern laptops, the keyboard is often integrated into the top panel of the chassis. In such models, replacement is more complex, as you need to carefully dismantle the chassis, disconnect the cables, remove the top cover and take care not to damage the touchpad, battery, speakers or other components.

Precision is particularly important for MacBooks, ultrabooks and slim business models. In these devices, the keyboard module is often tightly fitted into the chassis, with important components located nearby. Attempting a DIY replacement without experience can damage the top cover, the keyboard ribbon cable or a fragile connector on the motherboard.

How keyboard repairs are carried out at Ramservice

First, the technician checks the symptoms – whether any keys are unresponsive, if keys stick, if the keyboard backlight works, and if there are any signs of liquid spillage or physical damage. Following this, a diagnostic check is carried out on the keyboard, ribbon cable, connector, backlight and related components.

The laptop is disassembled taking into account the design of the specific model. The technician checks for oxidation, damaged contacts, broken fastenings or defects from a previous repair. Where possible, the contacts are cleaned, individual keys are restored or the mechanism is repaired.

When the keyboard cannot be repaired, a compatible keyboard module or top case is fitted. After reassembly, the operation of all keys, function combinations, backlighting, touchpad and the device’s overall stability are checked. This is important because the problem may lie not only with the keyboard, but also with the ribbon cable, connector or circuit board.
