A laptop circulates a large volume of air through its cooling system every day. Along with this air, dust, lint, small fabric particles and other debris enter the casing. Due to its compact design, the device gradually begins to function like a miniature vacuum cleaner, particularly if it is frequently used on a sofa, bed, in the office or whilst travelling.
Dust accumulation is a natural process, so it is advisable to carry out preventive maintenance on your laptop regularly. For most models, cleaning once every 12 months is sufficient. Gaming laptops, workstations, MacBooks, ASUS ROG, Lenovo Legion, Dell, HP, MSI and other high-performance models may require servicing more frequently, as their processors and graphics cards operate under high thermal loads.
At Ramservice in Bratislava, we carry out professional laptop dust cleaning, replacement of thermal paste, thermal pads and, if necessary, liquid metal. After servicing, the device undergoes testing for temperature, noise and operational stability.
Why does a laptop start to overheat and make noise?
A laptop’s cooling system consists of a fan, a heat sink, heat pipes and thermal interfaces. When dust accumulates on the heat sink grilles, it forms a dense layer resembling felt. This layer blocks the escape of hot air from the chassis.
The fan starts spinning faster, the laptop becomes noisier, but the temperature of the processor and graphics card continues to rise. Hot air is not expelled, and the heat remains inside the chassis. As a result, the keyboard, the bottom cover, the area near the hinges and the air vent become hot.
The problem is particularly noticeable in gaming laptops, slim ultrabooks and models with a discrete graphics card. During gaming, video editing, graphics work, 3D programmes or when using a large number of tabs, the cooling system operates almost at full capacity. If it is clogged with dust, the laptop quickly loses stability and performance.
Signs that your laptop needs cleaning and thermal paste replacement
The first sign is constant fan noise, even during normal use. The laptop may hum whilst a browser is open, office programmes are running, or you are watching a video. If the casing becomes very hot around the keyboard, near the air vents, or on the underside, it is best not to delay preventive maintenance.
Another important symptom is sudden shutdowns or reboots under load. This is often triggered by overheating protection when the temperature of the processor or graphics card reaches a critical level. This can occur whilst gaming, making video calls, watching high-quality videos, or running resource-intensive programmes.
Your laptop may also start to slow down due to thermal throttling. This is a protective mechanism whereby the processor or graphics card reduces its clock speed to lower the temperature. As a result, programmes open more slowly, FPS drops in games, and the device performs significantly worse than its technical specifications would suggest.
The dangers of a laptop overheating
Prolonged operation at high temperatures accelerates the wear and tear of internal components. Overheating negatively affects the processor, graphics card, SSD, battery, power components, motherboard and plastic parts of the chassis.
If the problem is ignored, the laptop may become unstable, switch itself off, lose performance or fail to start up. In severe cases, overheating can lead to damage to the power supply system, or degradation of the graphics chip or motherboard. Such repairs are usually significantly more expensive than timely cleaning of the cooling system and replacement of the thermal paste.
Preventive maintenance does not repair components that are already damaged, but it helps to reduce the risk of overheating, stabilise temperatures and prolong the laptop’s normal operation.
How cooling system maintenance is carried out at Ramservice
First, the technician checks the condition of the laptop, signs of overheating, noise levels and the specific features of the model. The device is then carefully dismantled, taking into account the design of the casing, the location of cables, fastenings and the cooling system.
During servicing, the radiator grilles, fan blades, internal cooling channels and areas of the casing where dust has accumulated are cleaned. Old, dried-out thermal paste is removed from the processor and graphics chip. The condition of the thermal pads on the VRM, VRAM and other components in contact with the radiator is also checked.
If the fan is removable, the technician can lubricate the bearing with a special silicone grease. This helps to reduce extraneous noise and improve the cooler’s performance. After applying new thermal interface material, the laptop is reassembled and undergoes stress testing. We check temperatures, fan noise and system stability.
Thermal paste, thermal pads and liquid metal
For laptop servicing, Ramservice uses thermal pastes with high thermal conductivity – from 8.5 W/mK. The thermal interface material is selected based on the laptop model, processor type, presence of a discrete graphics card and the design of the cooling system.
Thermal pads play a distinct role. They are needed to cool the VRM power supply area, VRAM, and other components that do not make contact with the heat sink via thermal paste. Worn or incorrectly selected thermal pads can impair heat dissipation, so it is important to use materials of the correct thickness and thermal conductivity.
For high-performance gaming laptops, particularly certain ASUS ROG models, as well as for devices in which liquid metal has been used either at the factory or following previous servicing, we carry out a professional replacement of this thermal interface. Liquid metal conducts electricity, so during the repair, our technician protects the circuit board components from the risk of a short circuit and applies the material as carefully as possible.
Laptop cleaning in Bratislava with a warranty on work
Ramservice cleans laptops of dust, replaces thermal paste and thermal pads, and services cooling systems for customers from various districts of Bratislava – Petržalka, Ružinov, Staré Mesto, Nové Mesto, Dúbravka and other parts of the city.
The procedure usually takes between 1 and 3 hours. The exact time depends on the laptop model, the complexity of disassembly, the condition of the cooling system, and whether thermal pads or thermal paste need replacing.
After servicing, the customer receives a reassembled and tested laptop with verified operating temperatures, lower noise levels and a warranty on the work carried out. If the laptop not only overheats but also shuts down, fails to charge, won’t switch on or has other faults, a full laptop repair may be required. A Ramservice technician will carry out diagnostics, identify the cause of the problem and suggest the best way to repair the device.
